The Benedictine Tradition edited by Sister Laura Swan
![]()
While she was on sabbatical after two terms as prioress of our community at St. Placid, Sister Laura was asked to edit a book on our Benedictine tradition as part of a series by Liturgical Press (series editor, Phyllis Zagano). This book is available in The Priory Store.
Norvene Vest, a Benedictine oblate and author of several books, says "Sr. Laura Swan’s The Benedictine Tradition is a lovely resource of Benedictine riches for anyone who desires to go more deeply into the nature of the Benedictine life of the spirit. From a 1500-year tradition, she has lovingly selected fourteen figures or groups, each representing a significant quality of Benedictine life. Each chapter begins with a quotation from Benedict’s Rule giving a clue to the quality for which this Benedictine is chosen. A very useful and helpful introduction to teach figure follows, along with some lovely selections from each one’s writings. I found myself slowing down as I read, to be nourished at leisure by the profound words of these persons committed to the Benedictine way. Sr. Laura closes with a chapter quoting from Benedictine prioresses as they reflect in writing on the monastic tradition in light of the demands of contemporary society. Those reflections offer a mirror for the whole of Sr. Laura’s book, which serves as a meditiation on how to be ‘in but not of the world,’ as a witness and sign of the love of Christ."

Engaging Benedict by Sister Laura Swan
![]()
Nearly fifteen centuries ago, Benedict of Nursia wrote a rule for Christians who wanted to live, work and pray together in community. With its core values of contemplation, hospitality and simplicity, the rule remains as useful and fresh today as it was when Benedict created it in Italy those many centuries ago.
But the Rule is not without its difficulties in contemporary practice. Sister Laura Swan looks at the Rule with a critical eye, seeking to unpack those parts that are problematic and to uncover gems that support the yearnings of todays seekers. She offers women and young people who find obstacles in the Rule some insights that resonate with their experience and yet are faithful to the challenge of the Rule. By wrestling with the Rule, and hence taking it seriously, Sister Laura offers readers guidance on many difficult and painful questions.

WHAT'S NEW AT THE PRIORY STORE
by Sister Sharon McDonald, OSB
Fall-- August, 2008This year in my work with and for and in our Priory Store, I have found myself learning the meaning of “Not on bread alone do we live.” (Matthew 4:4) Many people, myself included, come to the Priory Store to browse, to see what the new offerings are and to nourish our minds, hearts and souls.
There are many ways to nurture light, life and love. In the Store we find that many people enjoy stories, biographies, lives of the Saints and modern parables. Through stories we strengthen our own life of faith. Through the stories and their teachings, we get in touch with our own courage and wisdom.
We find that people often choose to give a Cross as a gift. Our Creator Mundi (collection of bronze crosses and crucifixes) brochure says, “The cross speaks of the radical collision of the Divine and the human. Intersecting arms embrace all of creation in unrelenting love.” It is this love that we are challenged to live when in the presence of a Cross.
We have other images here that help us nurture our ability to live this love, images on plaques, statues, pictures and note cards. When we contemplate these images they bring a deeper awareness of God. We then pray knowing that things of the Spirit bless us, our homes and our ministries.
As you can see, at this table called the Priory Store we can feast on many things old and new. Thus nourished, we are ready for ministry, for love in action in our families and community works of justice. “Clothed then with faith and the performance of good works let us set out in this way, with the Gospel for our guide…” —Rule of St. Benedict
The Priory Store welcomes as payment VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. We continue gratefully to accept telephone orders and special orders for books and religious articles.
The Store, located off the lobby in the Priory, is open Monday-Friday Noon to 3:00 PM, and on Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
